The Terror (El terror) by Dan Simmons.

The Terror is… sorry, I can’t be anything more than a fangirl here, already thought this guy was the master after The Hyperion Cantos series and then I found a brick of a book in my lap, the pocket edition it was (by the way, I recommend the normal paperback, it will make your arm stronger, but your eyes will be thankful) and with no forward knowledge about it I began reading it… what is this? Oh, so the Terror is not a mood, but a ship… oh, no, it is a terrible journey (based in factual events) or a terrible mindset… a monster? Such a clever portrait of a theme, not a single one, because how many faces can a horror have?

And so it goes, an impressive journey in plot, pages and writing. I remember vividly shuddering on a third of the book thinking: oh, sadistic man, what else is left to go through?! And there is more, much more and I can only say praise about this masterful weaving of facts and fiction and the complete range of emotions you get from the misadventures and the characters, they are terrible and amazing, so incredibly enduring and stupid, vain and insane. And the end arc with the Inuit it is just glorious.

It is a big book, but it is meant to be devoured. Amazing stuff.
