Audition by Ryū Murakami.

What a ride!

Being shallow, treating people like objects and a total failure in communication: mundane horrors with a twist. Everybody is a jerk and blessed Murakami, points to the reader too... I found myself rooting for someone getting something beyond what they deserved, maybe I am just too much of a jerk.

The movie by Takashi Miike is great on its own, the book is smoother I think.
