Guilt as a flavor, a mood
Nice English Edition. |
Yellow Jessamine by Caitlin Starling.
Ok, now I am really impressed.
I got myself a copy after reading The Luminous Dead and it was a great choice. After reading a couple of books in which the story is rich but the characters were so dispassionate, Yellow Jessamine came to scratch that itch with a fury. I think I admire that strong disposition of emotional bareness that leaves you a bit shaken, especially after the length of a novella.
The narration takes you through a thick atmosphere in a dark scenery of a time, roles and burdens, caged emotions that seem about to burst any time. And it is in the progressing state of anguish in Evelyn Perdanu, that it pours on to you and doesn’t let go; guilt is a terrible companion and it shapes you if it goes rampant and this complex heroine is a beautifully sad example, Caitlin Starling has some wicked skills to craft these emotional journeys, fleshing out the inner demons that annoy nonstop and steal your breath.
Definitely a very good read and I am hoping (big time, of course) for more books from this great author.
