Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky.

Metro 2033 is book one on the series and an ambitious endeavour. It has one truly original setting and I liked very much the dark atmosphere and detailed development of the worldbuilding, you got a bunch of elements thrown in the bag: despair, survival, nuclear aftermath, some weird supernatural events and a road trip.

When I found myself fascinated with the stations, the tunnels and its mysteries at the same time couldn't say the same about the characters, there is much rambling but their motivations are not clear and not much connection to be made.

But in the end, despite Artyom and company, I enjoyed the metro as the main character (well... it makes some sense for me).

Fun fact. They made a pretty famous game out of it, young people says... yeah, I live under a rock.
