Things that many don't want to explore
English Edition. |
The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison.
For me The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison has two sides: on one is the general plot and the progression of events and the other, the dynamics between characters and situations. The first is very flimsy, but the second is superb. There are so many ways people react in dire circumstances like this, either captivity or abuse and how it gets internalized, one may assume that they could have made many things to escape or overpower one of the captors, but the pit of despair or trauma some people get in, the manipulation, fear and violence that imprison them is a whole level of fucked up for the mind to bare sometimes. And this aspect is very well crafted and explored, the characters are endearing and with great depth.
It is always easy to say if I were in their shoes I would... whatever, many people react in a way that is so different than the one imagined. If we could be humble enough to imagine one of these outcomes in us... that would be pretty scary.
