Evil Mayan multilingual plant

The Ruins (Las Ruinas) by Scott Smith.
I got the impression that the author is very cheeky. The book named The ruins and such ruins being a hole in the ground (ok, a mine shaft), the characters talking about stereotypes, being stereotypes themselves, the POV only in English, a supernatural ultrapowerful plant that is never explained.
It feels a bit like playing with dolls. I get sometimes the settings, characters or origins are mysterious, you don’t need to always have an explanation for everything (at least for me), but this didn’t feel like that, just shallow and hollow. The characters are annoying and not likeable, that is ok, the problem is that they are not interesting at all, although they are kind of fun… in a cringey way. I found beyond amusing that they have been two days or so trapped and… are already planning cannibalism lol. And that is the weird thing about this book: it has a great mood, creepy circumstances, awkwardness and a nice plot progression… with dolls in an empty setting.
So, it was a mildly entertaining experience, above all I think it feeds that morbid curiosity for “generic people making stupid choices” but destined to quick oblivion.
