Books of the Raksura by Martha Wells

I have been uselessly pondering… Is it me or Martha Wells is very mysterious with titles??? I have to constantly check the name till the moment I give up and think: right, book 3. I imagine a conversation between her and her Editor like this:

E: so, it is finished… (straights her back and face) … let’s talk about the title…
MW: Yes, yes! I was thinking: The time I went looking for a home with my chick and ended in an island that was no island but a monster!
E: …. (pales)… right… ok, let’s remember, something short with an impact, but not so mysterious…
MW: … (emotion fades) … again? Fine! Book title 2! Happy?
E: it’s for your own good… but at least it needs some remote relation to the story, remember that…
MW: party pooper! Ok, ok… The Serpent Sea
E: …. Right… right… what serpents?
MW: they went to the serpent sea…
E: oh… fine then.

Same for the Murderbot series. I couldn’t remember the titles after book one to save my life. The next ones could be named Dissident synapse… Virtual Proximity or the likes without problem.

Sorry, couldn’t help it! In reality, my memory is crap, so I need a lot of help and my insecurities made me do it :P

I truly love Martha Wells characters, she has a knack for making awesome, sympathetic characters. The worldbuilding is marvelously rich, original and expansive. I always have a bit of trouble with animalistic characters, maybe I have a deficit in that imaginative department or some dark catholic leftover from my childhood… who knows, but I quite never get in the flow with them. Not here, after some hidden resistance, little by little I got involved in the story for my own surprise.

I don’t want to add more to this, there are some themes that hit me hard and I can’t be objective, but at least I wanted to state the great enjoyment I had had with these series.

They are amazing books. I am currently on book 3 (the crab shore? Hahaha) so there is more to enjoy!
